From public broadcasters to streaming giants: How Netflix and co. are influencing Europe’s media
In this interview for the University of Amsterdam newsletter, I shared insights from my PhD research on the impact of global streaming services—especially Netflix—on European screen industries. Drawing on interviews with producers, screenwriters, and creatives across five countries, my work explores how streaming is changing not just what stories are told, but how they’re made. My dissertation looks at a wide range of factors, from regulatory frameworks and investment quotas to data-driven storytelling and evolving production practices.
In the interview, I discuss how platforms like Netflix influence local content through a hands-on editorial approach, often adapting stories to fit global audiences. I also reflect on the challenges facing European policymakers as they try to protect cultural diversity in a platform-driven media landscape. For me, it’s essential to consider the full media ecosystem—regulation, production, distribution, and audience reception—to understand how these industrial shifts are reshaping creative work across Europe.
